Leopard Coachlines has been running buses in Christchurch city since 1995. We now have a fleet of 45 modern, environmentally-friendly buses on several key city routes including the popular Orbiter service, which does a circuit around the suburbs.
The Orbiter
The Orbiter is the largest single bus route in Christchurch, carrying 12% of all the city’s passengers. Leopard has provided the Orbiter service since 1999.
We now run 20 buses on this key route, which has been carefully planned to pass close to five shopping malls, the University of Canterbury and student hostels, three large secondary schools, several intermediate and primary schools, two sports centres, the Westpac Trust Centre, and the Princess Margaret Hospital.
There are several points for transfer to buses on other routes, with the Orbiter crossing the path of every other Christchurch bus route a one point or another. Passengers are automatically issued with a transfer ticket when they board the bus, or if they use a Metrocard they get unlimited travel within two hours.
The Orbiter runs seven days a week:
- Monday to Friday
- Every 10 minutes between 6am and 7pm
- Every 15 minutes between 7pm and 9pm
- Every 30 minutes between 9pm and 11.30pm

We care about the environment
Leopard demonstrates its commitment to the environment through action. We were the first bus company in New Zealand to run our entire fleet on bio-fuel during a 12-month trial, which ended in May 2008. From Mid-February 2010 after a successful trial Leopard coachlines now runs its entire fleet on bio-diesel.
The bio-diesel for the Leopard fleet is manufactured by Bio Diesel NZ, a renewal fuel from Solid Engery. It is blended with standard diesel to form the B5 mix and is called Bio-Gold.
We are also trialling bike racks on 7 of our urban routes and these are fitted to 25 urban buses, which are proving popular with Christchurch’s cyclists. Read more about how you can take your bike on the bus.
Other eco-friendly measures include the use of a water-recycling bus wash at our Christchurch depot and we are always looking for new ways to help protect the environment.
A bus company you can trust
Leopard Coachlines works closely with the city transport managers, Environment Canterbury executives and the other local authorities who plan and oversee the region’s transport networks. We are respected and trusted by them for our service and because we successfully meet and sustain regulatory and compliance standards.
