Stewart Island Adventure

Friday 24th - Monday 27th September

Halfmoon Bay, Stewart IslandIf you've always wanted to visit Stewart Island but never had the opportunity, well here's your chance. It may be the smallest of our 3 main islands, but Stewart Island is jam packed with fantastic sights, adventure, history, culture, flora and fauna.

Make sure you bring your camera... this inaugural Stewart Island Travel Club trip is shaping up to be something special.

South Sea Hotel, Stewart Island

Friday: Christchurch -  Invercargill

We'll depart Christchurch bright and early at 9am. This will be a long day, however we will have plenty of stops and a chance to see a few things on the way.

Our accommodation for the night is at Ascot Park Hotel in Invercargill, where you'll enjoy dinner, bed and breakfast.
Saturday: Invercargill - Stewart Island
We will depart early for Bluff where you'll board the ferry to Stewart Island. I am sure the weather will play the game, but it is an adventure after all.

Due to limited accommodation options on the Island, there are not a lot of single rooms available. Some of the apartments we have secured have two bedrooms and a lounge, so be prepared to share. Regardless, you'll be enjoying the tranquility, birdsong and views at either Raikura Retreat or Bay Motel.

You'll have the rest of the day to explore Stewart Island at your leisure.
We suggest a visit to Ulva Island Bird Sanctuary to learn about native flora & fauna from a Maori and local Stewart Island perspective. Or perhaps a village and bus tour around Stewart Island. These extras are at your own cost, but we can assist with organising them for you.

No trip to Stewart Island would be complete without the opportunity to sample local food from one of Stewart Island's iconic eateries. Dinner tonight will be a three course meal at the South Sea Hotel overlooking Halfmoon Bay.
Sunday: Stewart Island - Invercargill
You'll have the best part of today to continue to discover the magic of Stewart Island. We'll take a late Ferry back to Bluff, returning to Invercargill in the evening to Ascot Park Hotel, where you'll enjoy dinner, bed and breakfast.
Monday: Invercargill – Christchurch
After a refreshing breakfast we'll depart Invercargill and return to Christchurch. Once again this will be a relaxing journey for you, with plenty of opportunities to stretch your legs along the way.

Monday 8th: Christchurch - Wellington - Masterton

We depart for Wellington on Air New Zealand where we will be met at Wellington Airport by our waiting coach.  Our first stop is for lunch just north of Upper Hutt, after which we'll  make our way north to Carterton for a visit to Paua World. Next stop Masterton where we will base ourselves for the next two nights at the Copthorne Hotel.
Tuesday 9th: Masterton
Our day begins with a visit to Hood Aerodrome to view their collection of WW1 planes - all in flying condition. This is another enterprise that Peter Jackson has been involved in.
From there we move in to the city centre for lunch at the Horseshoe Restaurant.  After lunch we'll take in the area of the Golden Shears event, before heading onto the Pointon Collection of old cars and motorbikes. And before you think this sounds like a day for the boys, the Pointon Collection also features period clothing, wedding gowns and hand crafted gifts. From here we make our way back to the hotel.
Wednesday 10th: Masterton - Dannevirke - Napier
We continue our journey north, stopping at Dannevirke for lunch and a visit to the Fantasy Cave, then onto Napier where we have a guided tour of Aquarium New Zealand. We spend the next two nights in Napier, accommodated at the Te Pania Hotel.
Thursday 11th: Napier
Today should be a great day as we visit the Gannet Colony at Cape Kidnappers - you can get so close that you almost touch them! Lunch will be at Clifton Bay Café located on a 2000 hectare working farm overlooking the sea and cliffs at Cape Kidnappers.

Returning to Napier we take a guided bus tour of the very thing Napier is most famous for - art deco architecture. After the tour you will have free time to do your own thing.
Friday 12th: Napier - Taihape - Marton - Whanganui
Pack your bags for a early start as we travel cross-country via Gentle Annie Road, a 140km Heritage Trail, to Taihape for lunch. After you have rested and satisfied your hunger, we'll travel through Marton to Whanganui. Accommodation for the night is at The Avenue Kingsgate Hotel.
Saturday 13th: Whanganui - Wellington - Christchurch
All good things eventually come to an end but we still have one more thing to do - and that is to cruise on the Wanganui river in a paddle steamer, a unique maritime heritage experience. We'll have a lunch box on-board as we travel the 13 km stretch of river onboard the Waimarie.

After the cruise we return to Wellington for our flight back to Christchurch. You'll be meet by our shuttle buses for the return to your home.
